Update by Debbie Gitner, LCSW

The Massachusetts legislature continues to make changes that affect the elderly.

One recent change is the bed hold policy. Mass Health will no longer pay to hold the bed when your relative is sent to the hospital. The law now states that all Nursing Homes must keep the same bed available for a maximum of ten days. Carlyle House will not get paid while your relative is in the hospital. If your relative needs care beyond ten days in the hospital Carlyle House does not have to hold the bed unless it is being paid for by private funds.

All private pay residents will have their relative's room held as long as their bill is current. Any resident on Medicare who needs hospitalization will be asked if they want to hold the bed. But, Medicare will not cover for both the hospital and the Nursing Home. If a family member chooses to have their relative return to Carlyle House in the same bed, then they must pay to hold that bed.

Mass Health will no longer cover for any overnights that are not for medical treatment. If you choose to take your relative out to your home overnight, Mass Health will not pay to hold the bed. If you pay privately to hold the bed for your relative on an overnight, the same bed will be held. Otherwise, the bed may not be available upon your relative's return.

Update by Linda Sullivan R.N., DON

The flu season is upon us already. Carlyle House Nursing Home will be giving flu shots to all residents and staff who do not have allergies to the flu vaccine. We are expecting the flu vaccine in mid October as the serum is sent to us by The Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We do not need individual permission slips as the Doctors write standing orders for flu and pneumonia vaccines. The pneumonia vaccine is usually given one time only unless medically necessary.

Just a reminder, all people over the age of 50 should be taking a flu shot. If you think you have the flu, please call your loved one on the telephone and do not visit while you are sick. This will be very much appreciated.

If you have any questions about the flu or pneumonia vaccine, please give Linda Sullivan RN, DON a call.

bookBook Review
by Ruth Doody

Antonia who was known as Nia, was coming into her office at Eastern Edge, an established monthly magazine. She knew something was afoot when she was called into an emergency meeting. Nia was on the editorial staff of the magazine.

Nia's assignment was to interview the ten most eligible men on the eastern coast. One of the men to be interviewed was a basketball coach named Daniel Strahan, coach of the Breakers. Daniel never gave interviews so she knew her assignment was going to be difficult. Nia was able to interview the other nine eligible men.

Nia was never able to obtain the interview with Daniel but they began a friendship. The owner of the Breakers, Harlan Mackay, did not like Daniel's friendship with Nia. He did everything he could to break up their friendship.

If you like a romance, this book is for you. Fast Courting, by Barbara Delinsky, is fast reading. I hope you like it, I did.
